This was no nostalgia for oneself, but nostalgia for Man.

Art, in its relationship with the world and the Other, has always kept an incessant quest in order to ascertain a passage that makes us see the truth through the edge of a work. Lizet Benrey is not far from this concept. An artist labeled by a double nationality -Mexican by birth, and American by residence- her roots and daily life are intertwined. If the face of the world is polyhedral, just like light and its many gleams, dexterity in an artist consists of deciphering the threads that configure the warp of shapes. It also consists of reinterpreting the chromatic phenomena and memory contexts, the historical events involving it, and its very own spirit in connection with the breeze of days. Benrey enlightens the viewer through her plastic metaphors about serenity and passion, apparent antipodes brought together by the artist’s work.
Monotype, the graphic discipline chosen by Benrey, featuring its pictorial character, intertwines that abstract and evocative. She gives us pieces of excellent creation through which she unveils a celebrating universe. A celebration of light and opacity, but also a celebration of nostalgia and loss. The artist is an observer of the human condition and its variables; this way, between the captured movement and the fragmentation of shapes, the artist achieves a sensorial symbiosis. On one hand, the feelings of slowness, sadness; on the other, a burst of fragmentary shapes, an ode to life, by the grace taken from the fact of creation itself. Although in a first reading this artist’s work could cause the viewer to develop a certain air of disenchantment, the chromatic set with predominant notes of cold colors is subdued by an acute use of accentuating lively colors such as those of reddish, orange, loamy, and electric blue tones, that give back the viewer a sensation of a certain hope. Vitality is announced in those lines and a gesticulation lit by such gleams opens a potential way to touch life and blow a breath of life into the work, like an ember meaning to find hope, a path of light
A small work format, it is in its own powerful inner dynamism where lines and risks get sparked off. The existing relationship among the elements sets a constant tension within the composition’s core. From a fragment one can get a notion of the center; each snapshot of both the spiritual and the mundane realms opens a possibility to sense creation and destruction; thus, the plastic proposal by Lizet Benrey is clear: an incisive look (always questioning) takes one to catch a glimpse of man’s spiritual misery and his possible change, his possible redemption. That is the artist's bet, to question oneself, to set free that which has been seen, hence allowing oneself to establish a dialogue between vulnerability and strength. The work of Benrey quests far beyond the sheer piece, means to create a dialogue with its visual speaker from their soul; not only does it create in itself, but it also creates in the conscience of all who have been seen the world from its greatness and void. Thus, her work is highly human, and so small, because the art that touches the fibers of thought and heart does not need grandiloquence: it requires the brief space of that who has viewed just the necessary to give it back with the power granted by sincerity. Strength and risk, a passion for diluting herself in each work in order to get right before the viewer’s seduced eyes. Lizet Benrey creates small universes where both time and the Other look in the mirror.

La búsqueda de los interiores, la obra de Lizet Benrey por Rocio Ceron

El arte, en su relación con el mundo y el Otro, ha tenido siempre la incesante búsqueda de encontrar en las aristas de la obra un pasaje para hacernos ver la verdad. Lizet Benrey no se aleja de este concepto. Artista atravesada por una doble nacionalidad —la mexicana y por adopción de residencia, la norteamericana— sus raíces y su mundo diario se entretejen. Si el rostro del mundo es poliédrico, como la luz y su multiplicidad de destellos, la destreza de la artista consiste en descifrar los hilos que conforman la urdimbre de las formas. Consiste, también, en reinterpretar los fenómenos cromáticos y los contextos de la memoria, del suceso histórico en el que está inmersa y de su propio espíritu en relación con el aire de los días. Benrey alumbra al espectador con metáforas plásticas sobre el sosiego y la pasión, antípodas aparentes pero que son reunidas en la obra de la artista.
El monotipo, la disciplina gráfica por la cual ha optado Benrey, con su carácter pictórico, entrelaza lo abstracto y lo evocativo. Nos entrega piezas de excelente factura en las que se revela un universo celebratorio. Celebración de luz y opacidad, más también celebración de la nostalgia y de la perdida. La artista es una observadora de la condición humana y de sus avatares así, entre el movimiento capturado y la fragmentación de las formas, la artista logra una simbiosis de sentidos. Por un lado, los sentimientos de lentitud, de tristeza, por otro una explosión de formas fragmentarias, elegía por la vida, por la gracia que obtiene del hecho mismo de la creación. Aunque en una primera lectura la obra de esta artista podría provocar en el espectador un cierto aire de desencanto, el juego cromático, con notas predominantes de colores fríos, se ve subyugado ante un atento uso de acentuaciones de colores vivos como los tonos rojizos, naranjas, arcillosos y azules eléctricos, que devuelven al espectador una cierta sensación de esperanza. La vitalidad se ve anunciada en estos trazos y una gestualidad alumbrada por estos destellos abren una vía posible de tocar vida, de insuflar en la obra un aliento vital, de brasa que procura hallar una esperanza, una vía de luz.
Obra de pequeño formato, es en su poderoso dinamismo interno en donde se potencian trazos y riesgos. La relación existente entre los elementos ejerce una tensión constante en el núcleo de la composición. Desde el fragmento se puede tener noción del centro, cada instantánea de los ámbitos álmico y mundano abre una posibilidad de percibir creación y destrucción, por ello la propuesta plástica de Lizet Benrey es clara: una mirada perspicaz (que siempre cuestiona) lleva a vislumbrar el entramado de la miseria del espíritu del hombre y su posible cambio, su posible redención. Esa es la apuesta de la artista, cuestionarse, liberar lo mirado, permitirse entablar un diálogo entre vulnerabilidad y fortaleza. La obra de Benrey busca más allá de la pieza, busca dialogar con su interlocutor visual desde su alma, no crea sólo a partir de sí, crea a partir de la conciencia de quien ha mirado el mundo desde su grandeza y su vacío. Por ello su obra es altamente humana, y tan pequeña, porque el arte que toca las fibras del pensamiento y el corazón no necesita grandilocuencia: necesita el espacio breve de quien ha visto lo necesario para entregarlo con la potencia que otorga la sinceridad. Fuerza y riesgo, pasión por diluirse en cada obra para estar de frente ante los ojos seducidos del espectador. Lizet Benrey crea pequeños universos donde el tiempo y el Otro se miran ante el espejo.
